Jets News Conference Postponed

The Jets 11 am news conference this morning was postponed. No new date/time was given. The cause of this was the hesitance of the Chiefs to complete the compensation deal for the services of head coach Herman Edwards based on the belief that Jets owner Woody Johnson doesn’t want Edwards around anymore and would probably fire him if the deal falls through. It’s an offshoot of the law of supply and demand. If Johnson doesn’t want Edwards then the demand is down so the price should drop. It’s a gamble for the Chiefs and it’ll be interesting to see how things work out.

Edwards Goes to KC

It looks like all those quotes of Herman Edwards saying he wasn’t leaving the Jets was a pack of lies. The Jets are holding a press conference at 11 am today in which it is expected that GM Terry Bradway will announce that Edwards will be coaching the Kansas City Chiefs next season.

I can’t say that I’m surprised by this news.

Quote of the Day

I don’t know if he could rebound, but to bring in a guy with his history on a minor league contract, I figured, what is there to lose?

– Omar Minaya on the signing of Bret Boone to a minor leage contract. My thoughts exactly.

Mets Acquire Relievers, Second Baseman

The Mets needed bullpen help and that’s exactly what they got today when they acquired right handed relievers Duaner Sanchez & Steve Schmoll from the Dodgers in exhange for Jae Seo & Tim Hamulack. Sanchez will be the primary right handed setup man for new closer Billy Wagner.

The Mets also acquired a new second baseman today signing former All Star Bret Boone to a minor league contract. Boone, who also got an invitation to spring training, will offer competition to embattled encumbant Kazuo Matsui. There have been many trade rumors around Matsui during this offseason and Boone’s signing could be a signal that something is serious (or not). It could also just mean that the Mets decided to take a chance on Boone in the hopes that he could revive his career without taking much of a risk. Not a bad idea.

Mets Quotes

I added a new sidebar item called Mets Quotes. This is powered by a plugin that shows a random quote from a quotes database. I filled the quotes database with over 100 quotes that are either about the Mets or from personalities that were affiliated with the Mets at one point in their career. This includes 6 by Ralph Kiner, 6 by Tom Seaver, 44 by Casey Stengel and 29 by Yogi Berra. Others quoted are WesWestrum, Tug McGraw, George Steinbrener & Sparky Anderson, among others. If you have any suggestions for quotes please be sure to let me know and I’ll add it to the rotation if it isn’t there already.

Slow Time for Mets

Not much happenning in Mets land these days. Lots of rumors (mostly centering on Manny Ramírez and Danys Baez) but no real news.

Three Things The Jets Need To Address First

So the Jets season ended with a win on Sunday giving them a 4-12 record on the season and pushing their draft pick a couple of slots lower down in the order. Here’s a quick look at issues that will need attention in the next few weeks (pre-draft) before what promises to be a very busy offseason kicks into high gear.
