Jeff Reardon Arrested

After 16 seasons in the major leagues, which started with a stint with the Mets, Jeff Reardon has hit bottom. Accoording to reports Reardon, who owns 367 career saves, was arrested and charged with armed robbery after he robbed a jewelry store in Palm Beach. It’s always sad when things like this happen to former big league players.

Favorite Damon Headline

My favorite headline on the Yankees’ signing of Johnny Damon comes from Statistically Speaking whose article is headlined Damon adds hair, wins to Yankees. The headline is incorrect, of course, since Damon will have to cut his hair per George Steinbrenner’s rules.

Damon is a Yankee

It’s been widely reported that Johnny Damon has followed in Wade Boggs’s footsteps and signed with the Yankees. This is obviously a tremendous deal for the Yankees. Not only does Damon leave the Red sox, the Yanks’ biggest competitors in their division, but he fills a gap in center field as well as covering the leadoff position in the order which Derek Jeter has been filling the last few years. Jeter is really a number 2 hitter and will slide back to that slot of the order once Damon passes a physical and gets a haircut.

Mets to Sign Grudzielanek? That Depends on Matsui

Rumor has it that the Mets will sign Mark Grudzielanek on Thursday. Why wait until then? The deadline for existing teams to offer salary arbitration will have passed and the Mets will not be required to give St. Louis a draft pick to compensate for the signing.

What does this mean for Kazuo Matsui? I think it means the team has a serious buyer on their hands. As much as Omar Minaya wants to replace Matsui I don’t think he’d acquire another starting second baseman unless he had a suitor willing to take Matsui off his hands. Though with Matsui’s salary I’d figure the Mets would have to make a contribution toward his 2006 salary.

Who would take Matsui off the Mets hands? I don’t know. It could be the San Diego Padres who are rumored to be getting ready to trade Mark Loretta to the Red Sox for David Wells.
