Sanchez Hails Cab, Mets Driven Downtown

Duaner Sanchez caught a cab on Sunday night which changed the course of the non-waiver trade deadline for the Mets and changed the way manager Willie Randolph will manage his bullpen and outfield for the rest of the season.

Talk, Talk, Talk

With the non-waiver trade deadline looming there’s alot of talk going on about possible trades in baseball. The loudest talk about deals involving the Mets have centered on Dontrelle Willis and Barry Zito. I agree with the idea from which those rumors got their legs.

The idea is that rather than get a starter for the end of the rotation who could possibly help stabilize it the Mets should set their sites higher and get a pitcher capable of performing at the top of the rotation to either pitch between Pedro Martinez and Tom Glavine or replace either of them if they are too exhausted or injured. Martinez’s toe and hip problems this season are a testament to the legitimacy of this idea. Another philosophy on such a trade is that the Mets are so close to being championship caliber this year that it would pay to sacrifice the future in order to pull it off now.

The problem with these rumours is that you can’t trade for players whose teams say they are not available. I don’t expect to see either Zito or Willis traded before the deadline. So let’s cute the Zito/Willis talk for now and focus on doable deals.

Of course, I could be wrong….

Martin, McCareins and PUP

The Jets opened camp by quietly putting star running back Curtis Martin on the physically unable to perform list (PUP). That means that Martin is unable to participate in team practices but can attend meetings and rehab with the team. Also PUPed was starting wide receiver Justin McCareins. The two can be removed from the list and start practicing with the team at any time. In the meantime according to the rules they are not considered as being on the roster so the team may carry extra players in their places until such time that they are activated.

Endy Chávez, Hero

Click here for a recap of last night’s game.

What’s with Endy Chavez lately? He’s been getting some good hits lately including a 3 run homer in the second inning to put the Mets ahead temporarily in a game they eventually lost. Last week Chavez had a game winning double in the 10th inning against the Reds.

Way to go, Endy.

Catching Up

It seems like Mostly Mets should have had a name change to Mostly Absent over the last few weeks as pressures from my real job led me to put the blog a side for a while. I’m back now, at least part time.

In the time that I didn’t post I got alot of questions about the giveaway I announced just before I stopped posting. To answer everyone’s questions, I got several suggestions for how to handle the giveaway. But being as I got busy with work as these suggestions were coming in I decided that the first 4 suggestions would become winners and distributed the DVDs to the people who made those suggestions. My apologies to those who were waiting for a contest announcement. I didn’t anticipate my emplyer landing a major account with a shoret deadline this month and I got caught in the middle. I’ll try to make it up to you soon.

Reyes: Player of the Week… Again

I don’t think my praise of Jose Reyes yesterday had anything to do with this but Reyes was named NL Player of the Week yesterday. It was the second week in a row he won the award. The first time he shared it with teammate David Wright. Ths time he gets it solo and it’s very well deserved. He becomes the first Met to win the award two weeks in a row since Jesse Orosco is 1983.

Reyes is Also a Deity

A couple of weeks ago I praised David Wright. He’s been great all year and gets better every time I watch him.

Now it’s Jose Reyes‘s turn. He had two consecutive 4 hit games this weekend, has had 4 hit games in 3 of the last 4 and has a 13 game hit streak going in which he raised his average from .246 to .302. Ok, he’s a leadoff guy so average doesn’t tell the whole story. His on base percentage is up to .361. In the last 7 days he’s batting .613/.613/1.032 with 10 runs, 3 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 4 stolen bases and an OPS of 1.645. Has has gotten hits in hist first at bat in the last 7 games (including a double and 2 homers) and scored in 4 of them. He is absolutely on fire.

Make Your Own Contest for 1986 Mets DVD Giveaway

You may have noticed the link on the right sidebar for the 1986 World Series DVDs. The folks who produced it were nice enough to send me a few copies to give away. This DVD set is excellent. The 9 DVD set includes 1 DVD each for all 7 games of the series as well as game 6 of the NLCS (the 16 inning game against Houston) plus an additional DVD with game clips, interviews etc. It is truly a great set.

I have been trying to think of a different way of doing a giveaway because I wanted to make this interesting. I didn’t want to just ask a trivia question and give a set to the first few people to answer correctly. (I came up with a great question, by the way.) The problem is that my imagination hasn’t been working very well lately.

So I’m turning it over to you, my readers, to make suggestions. Let me know your ideas for a givewaway by using the comments section below or by email. I look forward to reading your suggestions.

Wright & Reyes: Players of the Week

David Wright and Jose Reyes were announced co-winners of NL Player of the week honors for the week of June 11-18. It seems like only a week ago that I wrote about Carlos Beltran winning NL Player of the Week honors. Oh, yeah. It was.
