Injury Bug
The last couple of weeks I’ve been spending alot of time working on another one of my blogs and have missed some opportunities to discuss some things here. Indeed, alot has happened in Mets world the last couple of weeks and as all jaded long time Mets fans it leads me to think if this is the proverbial other shoe dropping as we go down the stretch drive with a thin outfield and starting rotation.
The latest casualty is Tom Glavine. The other day they were saying he could be done for the year but today it looks like it won’t be as bad. But with Pedro Martinez on the DL with a strained calf you have to wonder how much more loss this rotation can take before suffering a titanic breakdown.
The Mets have already lost Duaner Sanchez for the remainder of the year. Cliff Floyd is on the DL with an inflamed left Achilles. Ramon Castro‘s status is unknown after suffereng a left knee injury while stretching before a minor league rehab game for the Brooklyn Cyclones.
It looks like the inability to acquire a seasoned starter at the trade deadline and the necesity of trading Xavier Nady for bullpen help could all come to bite the Mets in the end. It’s certainly creating some edginess right now.

Pythagorean Baseball Revisited
With each Major League team having played over 100 games thus far this season I felt like now would be a good time to revisit the discussion on Pythagorean Method that I started in June. Back then the teams had played over 60 games. With about 40 more games upnder their belts let’s see if the theory holds true.

Willie Blows Call On Injured Player Again
Cliff Floyd took himself out of last Saturday’s game due to his sore left Achilles and did not play again until a pinch hitting appearance on Tuesday. Before Tuesday’s game manager Willie Randolph had been asked if Floyd was available to play and he said yes explaining that the injury was not of DL severity. Less than a day later Floyd was put on the disabled list. He is eligible to come off the DL on Aug. 23.
This brings up a complaint I have had with Randolph over his tenure as Mets manager.

Ledee Comes Back to New York
The Mets picked up outfielder Ricky Ledee off waivers from the Dodgers yesterday. Ledee, who came up with the Yankees, will add some depth in the outfield and a lefty bat from the bench. This is an excellent move. With Xavier Nady gone to the Pirates and Cliff Floyd‘s sore left Achilles the Mets have been playing Endy Chavez and Lastings Milledge regularly in left and right and could use another outfielder for emergency purposes. And with the left handed hitting Chavez and switch hitting Jose Valentin getting so many starts the bench was bare of left handed hitters. Good move.

Lo Duca Divorcing
The other day Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca announced that he would not speak to the media for the rest of the season. This came as some surprise as Lo Duca had been very forthcoming with the media since coming to the Mets this past winter. When asked why he made this decision Lo Duca cryptically answered “You’ll find out tomorrowâ€. That was on Saturday.
Today is Monday and although we don’t have official word on the reason the New York Post it may be because Lo Duca is in the midst of a divorce from his wife. The divorce proceedings stem from accusations that Lo Duca had strayed form his wife by commiting adultery and has been going on since mid April.
This may or may not have been the reason that Lo Duca stopped talking with the media. We’ll have to wait and see if anything else comes to light.

Floyd Retiring?
According to an article by Don Burke in the Star Ledger Mets left fielder Cliff Floyd could be considering retirement after this season. The sore left Achilles’ tendon that caused him to leave Saturday’s game in the first inning is inflamed and has some fluid in it. The Achilles’ has apparently been bothering him all season and must be affecting him menatlly by now.

Paul Lo Duca: International Man of Mystery
Paul Lo Duca told reporters on Friday that he will no longer speak to the media this season. This came as a surprise as Lo Duca had always made himself available to the media for comment. When asked why he was giving reporters the cold shoulder Lo Duca would only say “You’ll find out tomorrow”. I’m thinking that a reporter either misquoted him or quoted something Lo Duca told him in confidence.

Wright Not Going Anywhere Either
The Mets announced that they have signed David Wright to a contract extension that will keep him with the team at least through the 2012 season with a club option for the 2013 season. This insures that the left side of the infield featuring Wright and Jose Reyes will be in Flushing together through the 2010 season as Reyes signed a contract last week. Securing these two players goes a long way toward insuring an exciting and contending team for the forseeable future. In addition to guaranteeing that two of the teams most exciting players will remain with the club it will also make the Mets a more attractive option for free agents over the next few years.

Reyes Not Going Anywhere
Get used to seeing Jose Reyes in a Mets uniform. The star shortstop signed an extension that will keep him in Flushing at least through the 2010 season with a club option for 2011. Congratulation, Jose.
