Goodbye Cliff, Hello Moises

The Mets affectively cut Cliff Floyd loose with yesterday’s signing of Moises Alou. According to general manager Omar Minaya Alou will be the regular left fielder next season making Floyd, affectionately called ‘glass’ by fans, expendable.

No Replay for Jets

Everyone is up in arms over the non-review in the last seconds of the Jets game yesterday. Though I agree that the play should have been reviewed (if the rules state that it could not be reviewed then the rules need to be changed) I must say that the fact that the play was even an issue speaks volumes for the bad play coming from the Jets yesterday. It took the defense until the 4th quarter to have any control over the Browns offense and the Jets offense sucked in both passing and running the ball.

Solomon Willcots, color man for CBS on yesterday’s game, was way off base in saying that Chris Baker would have definitely landed out of bounds after catching a pass near the sideline in the endzone. Anybody could have seen how far inbounds Baker was when he caught the ball. Whether or not he would have landed inbounds if not pushed is something that we can debate forever (personally, I thought he may have) but it definitely wasn’t as clear cut as Wilcotts made it seem.

And due to the inept explanations of Willcots and Ion Eagle, the play by play man on the game, I still don’t understand why the play wasn’t reviewable.

As annoyed as I am about all that, the bottom line is that the Jets lost because they sucked. Replay or no replay, they didn’t deserve to win that game.

Game 7 Double Play

I posted video of Shawn Green‘s great double play in game 1 of the NLDS against the Dodgers so it’s only fair that I post video of Endy Chavez‘s even more exciting double play from game 7 of the NLCS against the Cardinals. The Mets may have lost the series but there are definitely several highlights and this is chief among them.

Mets Strike Out Looking

The whole season came down to this. Down by two runs with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning of game 7 and the bases were loaded. Who came to the plate? None other than the $119 million man: Carlos Beltran.

When the Mets signed Beltran to that huge contract before the 2005 season (there are 4 more years on that contract) it was just for this situation. Mets fans all over the world finally got to see they star center fielder bat in this most pressure packed situation. The situation he was being payed millions of dollars to handle. What did he do??? He striuck out looking!

Now Mets fans all over the world feel ripped off.

Don’t get me wrong. There are many other reasons the Mets lost this series to the Cardinals. They should have one it in 5 or 6 games and never have had to play a game 7.

But for Beltran to strike out looking is inexcusable. At least give me a fly ball to the warning track. Give me an out I can be proud of. (Not that I’m proud of any outs but you understand what I mean.) An out like that is so embarrassing there should be a rule against games ending that way. (Stike out looking on the last at bat of the game and we’ll do the at bat over again.)

The Mets have plenty to be proud of for the 2006 season. To have it end on a called third strike is a shame.

Sour Grapes for Pujols

One down, 3 more to go. My favorite part of lasts nights 2-0 Mets win was when Carlos Beltran fired the ball to Carlos Delgado at first base after catching the ball in center field to double up Albert Pujols who made the baserunning error of moving too far away from the bag. Pujols was noticeably frustrated. His post game comments bear that frustration out. He was quoted as saying that Tom Glavine didn’t throw a very good game. Pujols should know better. You can talk like that when your teams wins and you go 4 for 4 but not when your team only gets 4 hits and doesn’t score any runs.

R.I.P. Cory Lidle

By now anyone reading this knows about the incident in which former Mets and ‘current’ Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle was killed. The story has been all over the news in the last 24 plus hours. Nobody would confuse Lidle with Thurman Munson, the Yankees catcher and captain who lost his life in a place crash in 1979, but his death is tragic nonetheless. Lidle’s career began with the Mets in 1997 and ended last week with the Yankees loss in the NLDS. Lidle had a career record on 82-72 with 2 saves (both for the Mets).

Pedro Out of Post Season

It was fairly obvious after Wednesday night’s horrible start that Pedro Martinez would not be starting game 1 of the NLDS. He didn’t look good. He didn’t feel good. What wasn’t obvious was what would be announced late yesterday. That Pedro suffered a torn tendon in his left calf. That is not the calf that had him on the DL earlier this month. This is the so called “healthy” calf. I guess the word healthy is relative. Pedro will be out 4 to 6 weeks which means he will not participate in the post season regardless of how far the Mets get.

Savannah Sand Gnats, er, I Mean Mets

For the second time in a week the Mets have made an announcement about their minor league affiliates for next season. Last week they announced that the New Orleans Zephyrs will replace the Norfolk Tides at the AAA level. This week they announced a two-year deal with the Savannah Sand Gnats to become the Mets’ Class A South Atlantic League team.
