No Longer Undefeated

The Mets split the first two games of this series. Look for Orlando Hernandez to get them back on track before the team heads to Shea for their home opener and the first of three games against the Phillies.

Undefeated Mets Take On Undefeated Braves

Click here for a recap of Tuesday’s game.

Click here for a recap of Wednesday’s game.

The Mets are one of two teams in the NL East that are undefeated after the season opening sweep against the St. Louis Cardinals. The other team is the Atlanta Braves who swept the Philadelphia Phillies in their season opening series. After tonight there will only be one undefeated team in the division as these two powerhouses square off in the opener of a weekend 3 game set.

The Mets will be sending Oliver Perez, Tom Glavine and Orlando Hernandez to the mound in Atlanta. If the hitting can keep up the good work it’s been doing so far the Mets should do well but I don’t expect them to be undefeated by the end of this series. I figure they’ll take two out of three.

Opening Night Success

Click here for a recap of last night’s game.

Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado celebrated fatherhood in high style last night. Delgado, who became father to a baby boy last week, smacked a two run double in the third inning to give Tom Glavine his first win of the season and number 291 of his career by a score of 6-1 over defending the world champion St. Louis Cardinals. Other highlights included Carlos Beltran throwing out David Eckstein at the plate in the in the sixth.

I’m going to say this now because I don’t know if I’m going to get a chance to say it again later (although I hope I do). The Mets have the best record in baseball!

Mota’s Apology Not Accepted

Guillermo Mota had been brought in to fill a hole in the bullpen when Duaner Sanchez was hurt in a cab accident in Miami just before last years trade deadline. Six months later he’s needed again to cover for a Sanchez injury but will not be able to answer the call because of his suspension.

Mota apologized when he was in camp a couple of days ago but apologies are not enough. As in politics the words “I’m sorry” don’t mean “I’m sorry that I did what I did”. They mean “I’m sorry I got caught”. Of course if you didn’t do the action you got caught for then you would never have gotten caught so your apology is worthless and your team is going to suffer when they need you because you did a selfish thing.

Bullpen Notes

With Duaner Sanchez out at least four months with a hairline fracture in his right shoulder and Guillermo Mota serving a 50 game suspension for steroids use the Mets bullpen is suffering. Aaron Heilman will now cover the 8th inning but he has been slowed by tendinitis and off season acquisition Ambiorix Burgos has had a lousy spring. In 6 months the bullpen has turned from the major strength of the team to the biggest question mark. It’ll be a very interesting April as far as the bullpen goes.

Sánchez by a Hair-line

I’m a little late in reporting this since work has been very busy lately but…

It looks like Duaner Sanchez‘s shoulder is worse than I reported last week. After cutting short a mound session last week trainers said Sanchez had some scar tissue come loose. An MRI and further examination showed that the righthander has a hairline fracture of a small bone in his throwing shoulder and would be out at least 4 months and possibly miss the entire season.

Sánchez Mound Session Cut Short

According to Mark Hale’s blog on the New York Post‘s website Duaner Sanchez‘s first sessions throwing off a mound ended abruptly after only a few minutes with the right handed setup man ‘over behind the mound’. Stay tuned because this may get interesting.

Manager Willie Randolph has already said that Aaron Heilman will assume the 8th inning role if Sanchez isn’t ready to go on opening day (which is what Randolph expects).

UPDATE
Hale now reports that it was only scar tissue breaking up in Sanchez’s surgically repaired shoulder and that there is no cause for alram.

Sánchez = Slacker?

The Mets finally had a spring controversy over the weekend when Duaner Sanchez was asked to leave camp for two days for what the team labeled excessive ‘tardiness’. During the suspension many mets players expressed a general feeling that Sanchez wasn’t pulling his weight while rehabbing from a separated right shoulder. The players felt that Sanchez wasn’t taking the rehab seriously and that his attitude toward the team could have been better. The general opinion translated into ‘this is a 25 man team and he’s rehabbing as if he doesn’t care about the other 24’. After a meeting with Willie Randolph on Saturday Sanchez apologized to the coaches and front office and started to apologize to the other players individually on Sunday. This issue should be over but we’ll have to wait and see to be sure.

Jets Get A Running Back

Shifting gears to football. The Jets engineered a trade for Chicago Bears running back Thomas Jones. This deal is tremendous. The Jets also swapped second round picks with the Bears so they essentially got an All Pro running back in exchange for the opportunity to draft higher in the second round of the draft. What a steal! The trade is pending a physical and contract extension. The extension is likely to be expensive but well worth it for s ateal like this. Congrats to Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum on pulling this deal off.
