ESPN is Burning

I was tuning into ESPN the other night to catch the first part of the 8 hour miniseries about the Yankees 1977 season “The Bronx is Burning”. I know I ranked on the New York Post recently for running boxscores and game recaps of ’77 Yankees games but this series looked like it may be good and featured actors playing three of the great baseball personalities of the time, George Steinbrenner, Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson. The show was scheduled to follow the Home Run Derby so I tuned in a few minutes early to see some of that. When I realized how far along they were in the derby (or, more appropriately, how much more they had to go) I took a quick look at the clock, turned off the TV and went to sleep. There was no way this show was going to air anywhere near it’s scheduled start time.

Say Hey!

Whatever happens in this All Star game it was nice to see Willie Mays in the opening ceremony. He threw out the first ball. It wasn’t a pitch. It was a throw from shallow center field to our very own Jose Reyes, who was standing on the infield dirt. (Reyes had the presence of mind to get Mays to sign the ball.) Mays then threw balls to the crowd while riding around the warning track in the back of a pink Cadillac.

The Maine Man

John Maine showed last night why he should be on the All Star team in pitching to his 10th win of the season last night after being passed over for the second time as Roy Oswalt was selected to replace the injured John Smoltz in the mid summer classic. Maine has surpassed the high expectations bestowed upon him after having a break out post season last year. While everyone was expecting Tom Glavine and Orlando Hernandez to hold down the fort until Pedro Martinez gets healthy enough to return Maine has actually been the ace on the staff. Does he deserve to be an All Star? Absolutely. But as long as he continues to pitch on the level he has this year I’ll let this snub pass with a smile as the Mets have managed to find a new ace.

Relive the Yankees 1977 Season (Yawn)

In yet another sign of the coming apocalypse the New York Post started running a series of game recaps from the New York Yankees ‘historic’ 1977 season. Every day they’ll be running a short recap and box score of the game the Yankees played that day in 1977 together with the standings as they were on that day.

It’s incredible what attention the Yankees garner even when losing. They’re 12 games out of first place and the media continues to reach to give them good press as if the world would come to an end if they couldn’t communicate good things about the team. They’re 8 1/2 out of the wild card too but that didn’t stop the Post from printing wild card standings either.

Message to Yankee fans and media: The season is only half over. 12 games is hard to come back from but still doable at this point in the season. 8 1/2 games is not out of reach either. Instead of crying like you’re waiting for the seventh sign you should be rooting for your team, showing them support and get optimistic. Remember what your Hall of Fame catcher said (while managing the Mets): “It ain’t over ’til it’s over.”

Post Talks More About Cynthia F-bomb

New York Post is having fun with Cynthia Rodriguez’s F-bomb shirt story. In yesterday’s edition they had a story about their columnist who went to Yankee stadium on Monday wearing the same shirt Cynthia wore on Sunday. The columnist got thrown out of the park. Cynthia, obviously, didn’t.

Cynthia Rodriguez Turns Heads

I saw where Alex Rodriguez‘s wife, Cynthia, was spotted at Yankee Stadium yesterday wearing a tank top that said F— You on the back. I usually don’t care what people wear (with the slight exception of Anna Benson’s Mrs. Claus outfit) but what was she thinking? Though it is her prerogative to wear whatever she wants she has to be aware that she will get some attentions. She’s one of the few wives who can be picked out in a crowed because of her husband’s stature and notoriety. I mean, who’s going to pick out Scott Proctor‘s wife? Who even knows if Proctor is married?

So what was she thinking wearing a shirt like that at Yankee Stadium on a Sunday when there are children around. Did she think people wouldn’t be offended? Did she think the shirt was appropriate? I’ve heard far worse at sporting events but that’s no excuse.

It’s OK to Hate Bonds, Just Hate Him for the Right Reasons

In this morning’s New York Post Mike Vaccaro discusses the hypocrisy about to be experienced at Shea when fans cheer for Guillermo Mota, returning from a 50 game steroids suspension, and boo for Barry Bonds, who has never failed a steroids test.

This is a point that I’ve talked about a lot. As much as we dislike Bonds, whether because of the steroids allegations, his attitude or just that we like to root against the other team, his steroids use has never been proven by a test. Personally I’m rooting for him to fail a drug test as soon as possible so that all the critics can be proven correct. But until then I’ll boo him for his attitude (he comes off as a real jerk).

Yankees (& Fans) Are Down

With the attention that Mike Francesa gives the Yankees and how he seemingly dreads saying anything positive about the Mets they should change the name of his Sunday night show on channel 4 from Mike’d Up to Yank’ed Up. (Giving credit where it’s due Mike’d Up is a clever name for a sports show.) Did you see how much time he spent last night discussing how the Yankees are sucking so far this year? Talking about the Yankees ‘lost weekend’?

Along similar lines Angels shortstop Orlando Cabrera was quoted in Los Angeles newspapers yesterday as saying that Yankees fans are bad losers. (Tell me something I don’t know.) Yankees’ fans response to this was something along the lines of
