AP Says Mitchell Will Name Players
The AP is reporting in an article that the illegal substance report by George Mitchell will name names. The article cites a few sources for this information and also says that a good deal of the name information was supplied by former Mets clubhouse assistant Kirk Radomski who agreed to cooperate with Mitchell as part of his plea deal.

Countdown Timer Bug Fix
No it wasn’t wishful thinking. A bug was responsible for the opening day countdown timer at the top of the page saying that there was 68 days to opening day when it should have said 168. I have fixed that bug now and the timer is as close to accurate as I can make it. The team has not yet announced the tentative schedule for the 2008 season but some other teams have announced theirs. Based on my research the Mets tentative opening day opponent will be the Florida Marlins in Florida on April 1. So the countdown timer is set for that date. Since I had to pick a time I set the time for a 7:05 pm start. The timer will be updated when more information is released.

Jaramillo Possible Hitting Coach for Mets in 2008
Rumors surrounding the Willie Randolph’s coaching staff for next season have been starting to go around. There is no reason for Omar Minaya to have not already confirmed the coaches unless there was a change at hand. The most rumored story is that the Mets will add Texas Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo as the Mets 2008 hitting coach but Jaramillo’s contract with Texas is still active until October 31. If Jaramillo is given the job then Rickey Henderson will most likely not be back with the club in a full time capacity and something will be done with Howard Johnson (most likely a move back to first base coach).

Today in Mets History
On this day in 1969 Jerry Koosman pitched the Mets to a 5-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles to win the teams first World Series in 5 games.
Also today, in 2000 Mike Hampton led the Mets to a 7-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals that clinched the NLCS and an ill fated Subway World Series with the Yankees.

Mitchell Report May (or May Not) Name Names
It has been rumored that the long awaited report on illegal substance use in baseball by George Mitchell will be released after the world series. Though it was previously reported that the report will contain names of offenders former senator Mitchell has now said that it has been undecided if the report will contain names.
I don’t see why there’s even a question about this. I was taught from a very young age that actions have repercussions and you need to answer for your actions. The players who have used these substances and those who deal in them know this too. They’ve danced. Now they’ve got to pay the piper. So by all means, senator Mitchel, put their names in the report. This has nothing to do with the publics right to know and everything to do with showing people that there are actual repercussions to the wrongs that they do.

Reader Stacey Chase wrote in with the following request:
Their season may be over, but the Mets still have a chance to WIN!
My good friend BRIAN DOMINGO, New Jersey native and ardent Mets fan, has made it to the FINALS of People Magazine/MLB’s Sexiest Fan Alive Contest!!
We need you to VOTE for Brian by visiting http://sexyfan.people.com/ and let’s get him the Grand Prize: Two VIP tickets to the World Series, a chance to meet the METS, and his photo/profile in the November “Sexiest Man Alive” edition of People. While he may not be as traditionally “sexy” as the mimbos that are currently in the lead, he is a TRUE fan: his grandma got him hooked on the Mets when he was just a kid – grandma’s now 102 and Brian is still one of the most die-hard Mets fans out there!!
Anyway, you can vote 5 times a day – PLEASE bookmark this link and vote 5 times every day from now until Oct. 26! Tell all the Mets fans you know to vote also – let’s show the world that nice guys – and the BEST fans in the league – DO finish first.
Thanks so much to everyone!
GO METS!!!!!!!!!!!!
With nobody else to root for this October this may be something Mets fans can have some fun with. Good luck, Brian.

Mazzone & Glavine Together in 2008?
The Baltimore Orioles have fired pitching coach Leo Mazzone. Mazzone was brought to Baltimore by his friend, former Mets coach and then Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo. Perlozzo was fired in June but Mazzone hung on until now. Mazzone was also the Atlanta Braves pitching coach for many years and witnessed many of Tom Glavine‘s performances over the years. I wonder is Mazzone’s whereabouts for next season will have any bearing on where Glavine will pitch. Could the two reunite in Atlanta? Or maybe somewhere else?

Schoeneweis May Be Suspended
According to an AP article Scott Schoeneweis and the other players implicated in the Albany County investigation into possession of banned substances. It looks like 2008 may be the second season in a row that the Mets start with a suspended reliever. (Last season started with a 50 game suspension for Guillermo Mota.)

Schuerholz Out, Wren In As Braves GM
The big news in the NL East yesterday was the resignation of John Schuerholz as general manager of the Atlanta Braves. After holding the position for 17 years, which included 14 consecutive division titles, Schuerholz will become team president.
Taking over the general manager duties from Schuerholz will be Frank Wren. If the name sounds familiar then it should. Besides serving as Schuerholz’s assistant over the last 8 years Wren served a year as the Baltimore Orioles general manager and signed Albert Belle, a move strongly regarded as the end of the teams mostly competitive years of the late 90s.
But it’s hard to judge Wren on what he did in Baltimore because his boss was the notoriously hands on Peter Angelos. Wren calls himself very similar to Schuerholz in terms of philosophy but different in terms of approach. It’ll be interesting to watch and see exactly what that means.
