Rockies Make Offer to Torrealba

The Denver Post reported yesterday that the Colorado Rockies have made an offer to their free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba. It’s a two year offer. The article does not specify the dollar value of the offer but does say that “Torrealba is in line to go from $1 million to around $3 million annually”. If Torrealba signs with the Rockies it would eliminate one possibility at the catcher position and increase the odds of Paul Lo Duca returning to the Mets next season.

GMs Recommend Replay

News out of Orlando is that the general managers have recommended Major League Baseball’s first replay rule. The GMs recommended to limit the rule to use instant replays to calls where a home run may be fair or foul, balls either go over the fence or hit the top of the fence and bounce back in and fan interference. MLB commissioner Bud Selig has classically been against instant replay but is sure to approve some sort of rule if there is enough demand for it by teams. The GMs voted 25-5 in favor of the recommendation which would mean the demand is there.

More Players Accused of HGH Usage

The latest round of illegal substance accusations took another step today when the San Francisco Chronicle leveled some blows. The Chronicle reported that Seattle Mariners outfielder Jose Guillen, former Giants third baseman Matt Williams and former pitcher Ismael Valdez all bought human growth hormone. Though Williams says he took HGH on doctors orders to rehab an injury the Chronicle reports that all three had used prescriptions from the same dentist who prescribed HGH for Cleveland Indians pitcher Paul Byrd. The Chronicle report goes into more detail than I care to repeat here so click on over there to read the whole article.

Current Thinking on ARod

Ken Davidoff reports in today’s Newsday that the Mets may not be so hot on signing Alex Rodriguez. When asked about the possibility of signing ARod, Omar Minaya said “We’re very happy with Jose Reyes. We’re very happy with David Wright. We’ve got two of the best young players at those positions in the game.” Davidoff says that the Mets will focus on pitching. Mark Hale reiterates this point in today’s New York Post quoting Minaya as saying “We’re very happy with Jose Reyes, we’re very happy with David Wright and I don’t consider that a position of need.”

Meanwhile, Hale quotes an MLB team official as saying “Depending on David Wright’s true desire to move, I kind of wouldn’t mess with him”. I agree and I think Minaya does too so don’t get carried away with dreams of ARod in a Mets uniform.

The Climate at Catcher

Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com suggests the Yankees be more aggressive in trying to retain Jorge Posada. Rosenthal says he expects the Mets to make a “monster offer” for the catcher.

In the meantime Joel Sherman reports in today’s New York Post that the Colorado Rockies are so sure that they will lose catcher Yorvit Torrealba that they have already targeted his replacement. Their top target at this point is Ramon Castro but they also have interest in Paul Lo Duca and Jose Molina.

Pettitte Opts Out

It was reported last night that Andy Pettitte has declined the option on his Yankees contract. The option was for $16 million. Pettitte has said previously that if he pitches next year it will be for the Yankees. In declining the option his agent said that Pettitte needs more time to decide if he wants to play next year. Sounds a lot like what Tom Glavine is doing right now.
