Minaya: Reyes Will Not Be Traded For Santana
Omar Minaya will not trade Jose Reyes for Johan Santana. And that will probably be the ultimate undoing of the Mets attempts to land the stud starting pitcher.
With the loss of Torii Hunter to free agency it was previously expected that a main part of any deal for Santana would have to be outfield help. This was good for the Mets position since they have a few outfielders (Lastings Milledge, Carlos Gomez ) that could be used in a blockbuster deal if needed. However now that the Twins have traded for Delmon Young they no longer have a hole in the outfield. They now have a hole at shortstop since they sent last season’s starting shortstop Jason Bartlett to the Rays as part of the Young deal. Without any really attractive pitching prospects to deal the Mets biggest and best chance to get Santana is if they give up Reyes in the deal. But according to Minaya that’s not going to happen.

Noble Talks With Wagner
Marty Noble of MLB.com posted an article about a recent conversation he had with Mets closer Billy Wagner. As usual Wagner had a lot to say about the state of the Mets and he didn’t hold back. Read the article to get the full story but here are some teasers.
On not re-signing Paul Lo Duca:
Maybe he wasn’t the best receiver. I don’t know. But Paulie competed. He battled every day, and we had some guys who didn’t show up every day.
On how manager Willie Randolph uses the bullpen:
“I understand what Willie wants — for a lot of guys to be able to pitch whenever they’re needed for as long as he needs them. I’m not sure you can have that. Guys are used to having roles. They’ll take the ball because that’s what the job is and that’s what the manager wants. But the idea is to get them into situations where they can be successful. I mean, you wouldn’t ask Carlos Delgado to bunt.
On losing Tom Glavine:
We’re down 13 games already, plus all the games Tom deserved to win.

McCarthy Leaves; 2008 Schedule Released
You know it’s a slow news day when the only stories of the day are one of your radio announcers leaving the team and schedule information for next season.
The Mets now have a vacancy in the WFAN radio booth with the departure of Tom McCarthy. McCarthy spent two seasons with the Mets but now goes back to Philadelphia where he previously worked Phillies games from 2001 through 2005.
As for the schedule – it was released late in the day. The home opener is April 8 against the Phillies. The last She game ever will be played on September 28 against the Marlins.

Mets Interest in Santana, Others
Mark Hale writes in today’s New York Post that the Mets will not trade for Johan Santana as a rental and will not include Jose Reyes, David Wright or Carlos Beltran in a trade for the Twins coveted left hander. Citing a source “with knowledge of the clubs thinking” Hale writes that the Mets would want a 72-hour window for negotiating a long term deal with Santana (72 hours is considered standard for this sort of thing).
Hale also says that the Mets are showing interest in Octavio Dotel and Shawn Chacon. Dotel would be a good addition to the bullpen. I’m not so sure what the attraction to Chacon is.
