Gotay Finally Waived, Tatis Makes Roster?
The reports the other day of Ruben Gotay being waived were premature. He wasn’t waived until this morning. This tells me that the last bench spot will most likely go to Fernando Tatis. The big factor working in Tatis’ favor is his versatility. He is perhaps best known for playing third base but can play first and outfield as well.

Post Disses Randolph
Willie Randolph was dissed by the New York Post this morning. The post published it’s 2008 season preview this morning and the cover featured the line “New York’s comeback call to Johan’s Mets and Girardi’s Yankees”. No offense to Johan Santana but Randolph should have been mentioned there if Girardi is mentioned in reference to the Yankees. If they wanted to use Santana for the Mets then they should have used a player for the Yankees too (like Alex Rodriguez or Derek Jeter).

Alou In Camp
Moises Alou visited camp yesterday and said he hopes to be playing by the end of April. In related news I saw a pig flying over Manhattan yesterday.
But seriously I’d have to agree with Omar Minaya who said that he expects Alou to return in May.

Rosenthal: Randolph On The Hotseat
Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com lists his managers on the hotseat in 2008. Topping the list is Willie Randolph. This is no surprise given the collapse of 2007.

Claudio Vargas Available
The Brewers have released RHP Claudio Vargas. The Mets seem to still be in need of a fifth starter. Do we have a match? Matthew Cerrone at MetsBlog is not convinced. What do you think? Leave your comments.

Reed Johnson Signs With Cubs
Count Reed Johnson out as an option for the Mets in left field. The outfielder, cut from Toronto on Sunday, has signed with the Cubs for 1 year. It’s looking more and more like Angel Pagan will be in left field on opening day.

Gotay Waived
In addition to waiving Steven Register the Mets also waived Ruben Gotay today. I like Gotay and hope he clears waivers. He’s not very good defensively but can give a spark offensively. And considering the shape the Mets are in at second base going into the season (Luis Castillo still not 100% from knee surgery, Jose Valentin‘s career on the line due to a neck injury, etc.) he could come in handy down the road. Based on some of the things I’ve read on other blogs and news sites I’d say it’s about a 50-50 chance that he gets claimed. I’m hoping that his recent ankle injury scares people off.

Register Waived?
Adam Rubin is reporting in his Surfing the Mets blog for the New York Daily News that the Mets have waived Steven Register. This came as a surprise to me as I thought he would make the team. It is believed that Register will be claimed by another team but if he clears waivers the Mets could work out a trade with the Colorado Rockies to retain Register’s services. (Since the Mets picked Register in the Rule V draft his original team, the Rockies, own his rights if he passes waivers.)
With Duaner Sanchez appearing to not be ready for the season I thought it would be between Register and Joe Smith to fill the last spot in the bullpen.

ARod Regrets 24+1
In today’s New York Daily News John harper writes about Alex Rodriguez and his decision to go to Texas for $252 million in 2000 instead of coming to play for the Mets.
Though ARod has regrets about not playing for the Mets I can say that I do not. I agreed with the 24+1 idea that then general manager Steve Phillips said he was trying to avoid. But now that we’re several years removed two other reasons have surfaced to be glad that ARod didn’t sign with the Mets. They are Jose Reyes and David Wright.
