Figueroa To Rejoin Team
Pedro Martinez landed in New York at about 3:30 this afternoon and the results of his MRI are not yet known. However the Mets have already recalled Nelson Figueroa from AAA New Orleans. Since Pedro has not been placed on the DL I’m unclear if anyone has been removed from the roster. In all probability Figueroa will not be added to the roster until the day he is needed. By then it’ll be clear whether Pedro will be placed on the DL or someone else will need to be removed to make room.
Dan Graziano at NJ.Com Mets Main Blog has another theory on Figueroa. Graziano just thinks the Mets wanted to have another reliever on hand since the bullpen has been used liberally in the first two games. That’s a possibility but that means someone will have to be moved by game time. We’ll know for sure in a couple of hours.

Pop Goes Pedro?
That pop you heard last night may be more or less than what it sounded like. It came from the hamstring of Pedro Martinez and it will take an MRI to determine the extent of the damage. Martinez felt the pop in the fourth inning with the Mets down 4-3 after he allowed home runs by Dan Uggla and Luis Gonzalez in the first and second innings respectively. He was removed from the game immediately and will fly have an MRI in New York today.
The Mets were able to tie the game due in no small part to Angel Pagan (RBI single in fourth, RBI sac fly in the fifth).
The Mets eventually lost the game in the 10th inning. But that doesn’t hurt as much as Pedro’s injury might. Many commentators are already saying that this could be the Mets undoing this season. I think it’s too early to say that. Even a devastating injury cannot kill the season after just 2 games. But I still wait with baited breath to hear the results of this today’s MRI.

Santana Starts Season Wright
Johan Santana‘s first start as a Met lived up to all the hype as the Mets scored a 7-2 win over the Florida Marlins on opening day. The stud offseason pickup who will make more money this season than the whole Marlins team pitched 7 innings allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 8.
The offense exploded for 6 runs in the fourth inning. The rally included a 2 run double by David Wright. In all the 7 runs represented the highest run scoring total of any Mets team on opening day. But don’t get too excited. This was against the Florida Marlins not the Boston Red Sox.
Though it was a great start for Santana keep in mind that, barring injury, he will have over 30 more. You can bet that not all of those 30 plus starts will be as easy. Just as Willie Randolph: “It’s very comforting when you give the ball to a guy like that. Hopefully, we’re going to get 30-something more starts like that.”

Roster Fine Tuning
The Mets completed the final fine tuning of the roster yesterday to cut down to 25 men for today’s opening game of the 2008 regular season.
- Orlando Hernandez, who went back to his trademark high leg kick in Saturday’s preseason finale, was put on the 15-day DL so he can work on his arm strength. Mike Pelfrey was awarded the fifth starters slot for the time being. Nelson Figueroa, Brian Stokes and Ricardo Rincon were the others in the mix for that spot. Figueroa and Rincon were sent to the minors while Stokes was DFAed.
- Ramon Castro was put on the 15 day DL due to his hamstring problem. Raul Casanova will serve as the backup catcher.
- In a surprising move Fernando Tatis was sent to AAA New Orleans in favor of keeping Brady Clark on the roster.
- Joe Smith has won the final spot in the bullpen as Duaner Sanchez was put on the 15 day DL.

Now Affiliated With StubHub
Some of you may have noticed that the ticket banner in the right sidebar has changed. This is because I have changed my ticket affiliation to StubHub. I made the change for several reasons but the top two are that StubHub is a more recognizable, trusted name and the the previous ticket vendor weaseled out of sending me commission money they owed me.
A friend of mine had used my link to purchase several tickets and when I inquired about why I didn’t get the commission they said that they don’t give a commission if the buyer had previously visited their site through my link. Huh? They said this was to combat click fraud. That’s laughable. Of course this does not combat click fraud in any way, shape or form. It just deprives the innocent affiliate (in this case me) of commission money.
So now StubHub will be my ticket vendor. I reworked the sidebar widget to show the next 10 Mets games on the schedule. Click a link and you’ll be brought to the StubHub page for that game. I hope this helps people find the tickets they want. Enjoy and feel free to send me feedback.
(By the way, if any WordPress bloggers are reading this the StubHub widget can be customized. Let me know if you’d like me to help you make one for your blog.)

Gotay to Braves, Register to Rockies
Ruben Gotay was claimed by the Braves. Let the second guessing begin!
The Mets were not able to work out a trade to keep Steven Register so he has been returned to the Rockies.
