Mets Today: Leaderless Mets
Over at Mets Today Joe writes about the leaderless Mets. Joe is, of course, talking about the on field leaders. I tend to agree with his point.

Alou DLed Again
In what could hardly be called a shocker Moises Alou was placed on the disabled list. An MRI yesterday showed he has a strained left calf. Catcher Raul Casanova was called up to take Alou’s space on the roster. Ideally the Mets would have called up an outfielder but in another display of their astounding lack of depth there was no outfielder worth calling up. Way to go, Omar!

Pedro Not Retiring
It was reported a few days ago that Pedro Martinez was considering retirement after this season to help care for his ailing father. Despite a sigh of relief that some Mets fans may have breathed thinking that they will be free of an aging fragile pitcher, Pedro has been quoted as saying that he would like to pitch through the 2010 season. For more on the story read Marty Noble’s article at MLB.com.

Willie Backtracks on Odd Comments
A lot of talk about some comments Willie Randolph made to a reporter on Sunday. The basic gist of the comments was Willie complaining that SNY was trying to make him look bad and that people are being more critical of him due to race. Both of these comments are dumb and Willie tried to brush them up before the first game of today’s day/night doubleheader against the Braves. He said the comments were made tongue in cheek but I don’t think he meant that. I think he meant that the comments just rolled out without much thought and that saying them was an innocent mistake. Either way this is a distraction that the team does not need right now as they are still struggling to get play the kind of baseball that is expected of them.

Willie Name All Star Coach
This just in…
Willie Randolph has been named a coach for this year’s All Star game. I wonder what happens if he gets fired between now and then. Does he still coach? If yes then whose uniform does he wear?

Peterson In Trouble?
Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News wonders aloud if Rick Peterson will be fired first. The wondering begins in the last sentence of the third to last paragraph of the article. (Thanks to Matthew Cerrone at Metsblog for the tip in this post.)

Notes From A Day Off
- The Mets have some tough decisions to make today. It looks like Moises Alou is ready to begin his season. The scare with his foot (where they thought he may have a fracture) has passed. But how will the team make room for Alou?
Common thinking is that if Brian Schneider is ready to return from a staph infection in his left thumb the team would be able to send third catcher Gustavo Molina to the minors. But what if Schneider isn’t ready? Then it would likely be a DL stint for him. He has not played in a week so any DL stay would be retroactive to last week.
- Amid the return of Alou there has been some lineup speculation. One of the things discussed on the blogosphere is the possibility of batting Alou sixth and dropping Carlos Delgado to seventh.
- In the New York Sun Tim Marchman calls for firing Willie Randolph
- Over at Take the 7 Train Andrew Rizzi awards Ryan Church as the Met of the Month for the month of April.

Time To Panic?
I wrote yesterday that it’s too early to panic. But after yesterday’s horrific loss I’m beginning to think that maybe it’s not too early. Oliver Perez looked horrible and made me question whether I actually want this team to make the playoffs. can you imagine this guy taking the mound when a playoff series is on the line? Scary thought.
Thankfully Billy Wagner had some balls to call this guy out. “Perez has honestly got to step up and know that we’ve just used every guy in our bullpen the night before. He can’t come out there and decide that gee, he hasn’t got it today, and so be it.”
Perez wasn’t the only offender yesterday. There wasn’t plenty ineptness to go around. But it all starts on the mound. And if the guy on the mound isn’t anywhere near where he should then he’s just asking for trouble. And that’s what happened yesterday.
