Hello Alex, Goodbye Damion

The Mets signed infielder Alex Cora to a 1 year deal yesterday. Could this spell the end for Damion Easley? Easley is a free agent and though he played well for the Mets he’s really just a spare part. Why would the Mets sign another spare part if they didn’t intend to get rid of the old one?

Mets Patch Sucks

The images below are the patches that the Yankees and Mets will wear on their sleeves this season to commemorate the opening of their new stadiums. Once again the Yankees beat the Mets. The Mets season doesn’t even say what is being inaugurated! Get with it, Mets!

Report: Lowe Signs With Braves

According to reports by Paul Newberry of the AP (link) and David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution (link) the Braves have come to an agreement with free agent pitcher Derek Lowe. The deal is estimated to be worth $60 million over 4 years.

This puts the screws to the Mets regarding Oliver Perez whose asking price probably took a bump upward as one more pitcher is off the free agent market. There have been rumors that the Mets have been interested in several pitchers but it seems pretty natural to me that the inconsistent lefty would be their main target at this point especially since Lowe is off the table. The Mets have offered Perez $30 million over 3 years. He’s probably not worth much more than that but there may be a team out there who estimate his value higher due to the fact that he’s a lefty and only 27 years old. Expect him to sign with the Mets (or someone else) in the next week or so.

Rickey, Rice Elected to Hall

Congratulations to short time Mets player and coach Rickey Henderson and former Boston Red Sox outfielder Jim Rice on being elected to the hall of fame!

When asked how he felt about getting into the hall of fame Henderson replied in typical Rickey fashion “I feel great about it. It’s been a long time coming.” This was, of course, Henderson’s first year of eligibility.

How do you think Henderson’s comment made Rice feel? Rice was in his 15th and final year of eligibility to be voted into the hall by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Mets Sign Redding (And Other Rotation Thoughts)

The Mets signed RHP Tim Redding on Friday. This could be a bigger signing than it appears. Redding went 10-11 with a 4.95 ERA for Washington last year. To reach double digits in wins for a team like the Nationals is quite an accomplishment. But more important is that he pitched 182 innings. Having an innings eater at the middle or end of the rotation should help the bullpen stay fresh.

This signing shouldn’t mean the end of the Mets pursuit of Derek Lowe. However things have gotten more complicated on the Lowe front as the Braves have entered the market after losing John Smoltz to the Red Sox. Based on what I’ve been reading the Mets are intent of signing Lowe or Oliver Perez. I’d actually like to see them sign both but that may be cost prohibitive.

In the meantime it seems as though Pedro Martinez is interested in the Marlins but they’re not interested in him. Call me sentimental but I still like Pedro and hope to see him in a Mets uniform even if his role is diminished to that of a back end starter. Pedro symbolizes the beginning of the current Mets team. He was the first big free agent signing of the Omar Minaya era and it would be nice for the Mets to win a series with him on the team.
