Mets and Yanks to Make a Deal?

Joel Sherman reports in today’s New York Post that the Mets and Yankees are discussing a blockbuster deal the centerpiece of which is Mike Cameron for Gary Sheffield. I’m like the idea of this trade depending on what spare parts are built into it. Cameron would get a chance to play his natural and preffered position and Sheffield would give the Mets a solid bat to put in the middle of their order and solidify an outfield that could then be called among the best in the majors. Sherman calls his story and exclusive and quotes GMs from both the NL and AL as his anonymous sources. It’ll be interesting to see if and how this developes.

Good Win

Click here for a recap of last night’s game.

Good show last night. Víctor Zambrano had another good start. This time he got some good run support and was credited with the win.

Tough Stretch Coming

No days off until the All-Star break, 10 out of 13 games against divisional opponents. Let’s get it on!

Reminds me of The Blues Brothers: It’s 106 miles to Chicago, we’ve got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses. Hit it.

Another Game Blown By The Bullpen

Click here for a recap of last night’s game.

Víctor Zambrano had another good start last night but the bullpen blew it for him. The guilty party this time was Aaron Heilman, who had a good streak of 13 scoreless innings spanning 11 appearances since moving into the bullpen in mid May. Heilman’s bad outing ended up wasting homers by Cliff Floyd and Mike Piazza.

Beer Leaguer Clowns Around

Jason Weitzel of Beer Leaguer, a blog plugged as “alternative viewpoints on the Philadelphia Phillies, gives a partial analysis of last night’s game from a Phillies perspective. A nice job but what brought me to mention it here was the amusing and perhaps insulting (from a Mets perspective) headline: “Clowns strike first: Mets top Phils”. What do you expect from someone whose recent post headlines include “Brett Myers chin hair report” and “Mr. Lieber, meet Mr. Treadmill”. All kidding aside, Beer Leaguer is a pretty good blog and worth a read to get an idea of what fans of other teams think.

Don’t Get Too Excited

Click here for a recap of last night’s game.

The Mets beat the Phillies 8-5 last night. There were several good hitting performances. Jose Reyes had 3 hits and manufactured a run in the first inning. Carlos Beltran and Doug Mientkiewicz had 2 hits each (including a homer by Mientkiewicz). Brian Daubach hit his first homer since being promoted last week. Many of the local media are calling it an eruption or explosion of the Mets offense and are calling it the end of the Mets recent slump.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Though this, coupled with one big inning in a loss on Sunday, is definitely an encouraging sign it’s still too early to put the slump in the past. As a lifelong Mets fan who has seen my fair share of inconsistency in their play over the years I have been hardened to the optimism a single game can bring. I have no problem with optimism. In fact I’m more of an optimist than alot of Mets fans are. But more than an optimist I’m also a realist and reality dictates that 1 game doesn’t count for much in a season of 162 games.

Want to be encouraged by last night’s game? Go for it. Want to be optimistic and hope that this is the start of something big? I’m right with you. But there’s still 2 games left against the Phillies and a weekend series against the Yankees coming up so don’t call the slump over just yet.
