Jets Sign Testaverde

Thirty seconds after saying I may not post much on the Jets (the season looks lost with both QBs Chad Pennington and Jay Fiedler on the shelf) something interesting happens. I just heard that the Jets have signed
Vinny Testaverde. I’m waiting for an official confirmation on this but it’s an interesting signing. We all know what we get with Testaverde and his arm is still strong so it’s an interesting match. One of the things I read in this morning’s paper was that the team would probably not sign Testaverde because he’s a slow learner and they would need someone who could learn just enough to play this week. So with Testaverde in the fold who do you start this week? Testaverde or Brooks Bollinger, who was scheduled to start when word came down that Pennington and Fiedler would not be able to? I guess we’ll have to wait to find that out.

I’m Still Here

No, I haven’t fallen off the face of the Earth. I haven’t written much lately because there just hasn’t been that much to write about. With the Mets tragic number down to one and the likelihood of being mathematically eliminated tonight there just doesn’t seem to be much reason to post on a daily basis. I’ll be here if something happens that is worthy of comment but am already in off season mode as far as the Mets go. I was hoping to post some stuff about the Jets but even that will probably be less than I would have liked since they are now two quarterbacks down with both Chad Pennington and Jay Fiedler. Go figure.

Quote of the Day

I saw a great quote by Willie Randolph about the role of spoilers in this morning’s paper and was going to use it as a quote of the day. But before I had a chance to post it I saw it on Metsblog. So instead of being completely redundant I’ll just link to the quote there.

I’m Proven Wrong

One day after I wrote about not promoting Anderson Hernandez the Mets go ahead and promote him. As if adding insult to injury (that is, the injury to my ego) Willie Randolph inserts Hernandez in the starting lineup on Sunday in place of Kazuo Matsui. It doesn’t bother me that they did that it just seems contradictory to the way they were approaching the Hernandez situation the last couple of weeks. Oh well.

Anderson Hernández Can Wait

Much has been said in the Mets blogsphere about the team not giving a September callup to minor league second baseman Anderson Hernandez. Most of it criticizes management for not making the call especially now that AAA Norfolk’s season is officially over. I, on the other hand, agree with the decision to not call him up. And the reason why I agree can be summed up in one name: Kazuo Matsui

Matsui is currently on the hottest streak of his Mets career. Right now you’re seeing him play his best ball. His average is up to .256 and has climbed 34 points since August 23 (16 games). You don’t want to interupt that for one of two reasons. Either (a) he’s finally getting his MLB legs and you don’t want to interupt the learning process or (b) you want to inflate his numbers to maximize his trade value. If the answer is the former then you will see him start at second base the rest of the season. If it’s the latter then you can exppect to see him replaced by Miguel Cairo as soon as the streak is over. At that point you could see Hernandez called up too. I honestly think it’s the latter but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Spam Karma 2

After 2 consecutive weekends of heavy comment spam (which caused me to install Spam Karma 2) I finally had a comment spam free weekend. None of the comment spam actually made it to the blog, by the way. I have all comments set to be moderated. But Spam Karma 2 has caught every comment spam that has been received since it’s been installed without any false positives. It’s caught over 200 comment spams in that time so that’s a pretty good track record.
