Mets Make Right Move on Maine to the DL
The Mets finally made a prudent injury decision when they placed John Maine on the DL last night with a sore shoulder. The Mets had previously made a rotation change that would have given Maine an extra days rest before his next start but later decided to shut him down.
This decision makes sense. Maine had shoulder surgery in the offseason and has been working hard since early December to get back into shape. Rather than let him pitch and risk doing damage to his arm and the team it’s better to shut him down. As a fan I’d rather see someone else (anyone else) start a couple of games at this point in the season if it will allow Maine to rest his shoulder and be healthy down the stretch run of the season.
I don’t say this often but I actually agree with the Mets decision in this case. They usually wait too long to put players on the DL when they need it (see Ryan Church last year for example). This time they were more proactive and didn’t risk the longer term health of the player or the team.
