Starting Rotation

Willie Randolph announced the starting pitching rotation after yesterday’s game. And it is:

  1. Johan Santana
  2. Pedro Martinez
  3. Oliver Perez
  4. John Maine
  5. ????

No surprises there except that Willie chose not to anoint a 5th starter despite having previously said he wants to name one by the start of the season. Both Orlando Hernandez and Mike Pelfrey had been competing for the job. They also both had lousy outings yesterday. El Duque had been clocked at 60 MPH on some pitches. Ugh.

Though I have written previously that I’d like Pelfrey to spend some time in the minors to mature his abilities I thought he pitched well enough this spring (until yesterday) to win the spot at least for the start of the season.

After the Mets acquired Santana I wrote a blog entry (actually more than one) calling for the Mets to sign another starter. My thinking was that with the condition that El Duque was in at the time he would not be able to be a serviceable starter. As time went on it became clear (to me at least) that he would not be ready to start the season due to the change being made in his delivery. At the time I was talking about this Kyle Lohse was still available. Though I don’t think Lohse would be the answer toward the top of the rotation he is certainly better than anyone the Mets currently have to fill the 5th slot. Instead it looks like we’re back to square one as far as the 5th rotation spot goes.
