Delgado, Church, Anderson Ailing

The injury fairy visited the Mets yesterday. Her specific appointments were with Carlos Delgado, Ryan Church and Marlon Anderson.

Delgado flew back to New York for an MRI which revealed a hip impingement. He’s expected to miss several days. I did a little research on what a hip impingement is and didn’t like what I saw. According to the Swedish Medical Center website (I don’t know how I found this one) a hip impingement “is caused by lack of room between the neck of the femur and the rim of the socket (acetabulum). This lack of room, or clearance, causes the neck and rim of the socket to jam together as the hip is flexed (as in sitting or running)… The primary symptom of hip impingement is pain in the groin region during or after the hip has been in a flexed position, as in activities such as running, jumping or prolonged sitting. If the pain from impingement interferes with activities of daily living, arthroscopic or open surgery may be recommended.” So we have a hip injury that manifests itself as groin pain when participating in baseball activities (running, jumping). This sounds like something that will nag him all year and may lead to surgery. I think Omar Minaya needs to rethink his backup plans at first base.

As for Church and Anderson, they had a collision in the outfield yesterday. Both were rushed to the hospital. Church has a Grade 2 concussion and a sore jaw. Anderson has a bruised chest. Both are expected to be out several days.

On a side note isn’t it annoying when the team says that a player will be out for several days? That’s a bit vague. Do they mean several as in 4 or several as in 12? Just tell me if it’s 3 days, a week, 2 weeks, etc.
