Minaya: Reyes Will Not Be Traded For Santana
Omar Minaya will not trade Jose Reyes for Johan Santana. And that will probably be the ultimate undoing of the Mets attempts to land the stud starting pitcher.
With the loss of Torii Hunter to free agency it was previously expected that a main part of any deal for Santana would have to be outfield help. This was good for the Mets position since they have a few outfielders (Lastings Milledge, Carlos Gomez ) that could be used in a blockbuster deal if needed. However now that the Twins have traded for Delmon Young they no longer have a hole in the outfield. They now have a hole at shortstop since they sent last season’s starting shortstop Jason Bartlett to the Rays as part of the Young deal. Without any really attractive pitching prospects to deal the Mets biggest and best chance to get Santana is if they give up Reyes in the deal. But according to Minaya that’s not going to happen.
