Alou’s Option Picked Up, Easley Signed
The Mets officially began assembling the 2008 team yesterday when they exercised the option on Moises Alou‘s contract and re-signed Damion Easley.
Though injuries kept Alou to only 87 games this past season he was one of few bright spots for the Mets in September when he hit for a .402 average. Overall Alou hit .341 with 13 home runs and 49 RBIs. The option year pays him $7.5 million. Alou stated his motivation as follows:
What happened this year to us — I really wanted to have another shot, another chance at winning a world championship… I really haven’t gotten over (it) yet.
General manager Omar Minaya explained the move as follows:
To be able to have this for one year at the dollars that we’re talking about I don’t want to use a no-brainer, but we felt it was a wise decision.
After missing all those games in 2007 and 64 games in 2006 while with the San Francisco Giants Alou says that he has already started getting in shape for next year.
I’m going to do everything that I can do to stay healthy. I’m going to work as hard as I’ve ever worked to make sure that I can play 140 games or something like that.
Alou mentioned drinking proper fluids and eating bananas as part of his diet.
Easley, who missed the last 40 games of the season with an ankle injury, played in 76 games last season and hit .280 with 10 home runs and 26 RBIs. His new contract is a 1-year deal worth $950,000. Minaya called Easley “one of the better bench players in the game”.
