Camp Notes
Camp hasn’t been very eventful in my opinion. That’s why I haven’t written much this spring. But there are a few notes that are worth mentioning now that we’re getting closer to the season.
- Pedro Martinez will have 2 spring training starts before the regular season begins but he doesn’t think he will be ready for opening day. I have no problem with this. I have said all along that I don’t mind if he misses some starts through the season. He gives you so much when he’s there that it’s a small price to pay to have him miss a start here and there. Either way, look for him to start the season late in the rotation. Tom Glavine will get the start on opening day.
- Billy Wagner has been shut down due to an issue with his finger. I’m not too worried about this yet. Things like this happen every spring. Give the guy a little rest and see where he’s holding in a few days.
- Dwight Gooden is in trouble again after admitting to his probation officer that he had taken cocaine and failed a drug test taken as a confirmation. Doc could get jail time for this offense, something he’s managed to avoind until now.
- We’ve got a real nice competition going between Aaron Heilman and Brian Bannister. Both have pitched excellently this spring and are making the decision hard for Mets brass. If I were making the decision I’d send Bannister to AAA to start the season while giving Heilman a proper chance to prove he’s worthy of being in the rotation. There will be ample opportunity for Bannister to be called into service during the regular season.
