Anna Benson Gets Kris Traded… Again… Maybe

The Mets traded starting pitcher Kris Benson to the Orioles for Jorge Julio and John Maine yesterday. Benson’s wife, Anna, had some things to say about it, as usual. Here’s a sampling:

“I’m not happy about it. I’m not going to lie: I’m not thrilled. I kind of feel like we were misled as a family about what their intents and purposes were about keeping us here.”

“I’m more pissed that people are centering on me as one of the reasons; I don’t feel that’s fair. I wish if they were going to trade my old man that they would’ve got a sweet deal for it. I don’t think they got that much out of it.”

“If somebody has a problem with the dress that I wore to the Christmas party, then say it to my face. I mean, did these kids’ moms not have breasts?”

Let’s take two angles at this and hope that maybe Anna will be smart enough to get the point from at least one of those angles (I doubt she is).

Angle #1: Anna, it’s not always about you. Mets GM Omar Minaya has coveted Julio for quite some time and has made a very strong commitment to his bullpen this offseason to the point of sacrificing his starting rotation. (Jae Seo was a victim of the same strategy when he was traded to the Dodgers for Duaner Sanchez & Steve Schmoll last month.) The Mets rotation now stands as Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine, Steve Trachsel, Víctor Zambrano and probably Aaron Heilman (though there are some other players who could compete for the fifth spot). Is this the strongest rotation in the league? No. Would it be a better rotation with your husband, Kris, in it? Yes. But you deal your strengths to address your weaknesses. That’s the way professional sports works.

Angle #2: That’s right, Anna. It’s always about you. You’re the reason the Pirates traded Kris to New York. You’re the reason Kris wanted to stay in New York. And ultimately you were the reason he was traded away from New York. The holiday party is only one of the reasons. The bottom line is that you were more of a distraction to the team than any players wife should be and there are enough distractions for players in New York without you adding yourself to the mix. Instead of getting upset and making silly comments to the media about it I think you should be learning from it. Many players have had wives in careers like yours without the wife being an additional distraction to the team. You do your job and let Kris do his. You want to go to his games? That’s fine. Just keep your comments clear of criticizing management and players and other controversial subjects and you will help your husband more than you think you are now. I know you love him dearly and only have his best interests at heart but keeping your mouth shut will help him more than being vocal will.

And, by the way, yes, someone should have said something to you about yout holiday party wardrobe instead of talking behind your back. But at the same time you should have been a little smarter about what you were wearing that day. This was a community affairs function for children. Not an arena to advertise your assets for possible future modeling work. The low cut, high skirted Mrs. Santa outfit was inappropriate for such a function and you should have been able to figure that out for yourself.

Good riddance.
