Schuerholz Out, Wren In As Braves GM

The big news in the NL East yesterday was the resignation of John Schuerholz as general manager of the Atlanta Braves. After holding the position for 17 years, which included 14 consecutive division titles, Schuerholz will become team president.

Taking over the general manager duties from Schuerholz will be Frank Wren. If the name sounds familiar then it should. Besides serving as Schuerholz’s assistant over the last 8 years Wren served a year as the Baltimore Orioles general manager and signed Albert Belle, a move strongly regarded as the end of the teams mostly competitive years of the late 90s.

But it’s hard to judge Wren on what he did in Baltimore because his boss was the notoriously hands on Peter Angelos. Wren calls himself very similar to Schuerholz in terms of philosophy but different in terms of approach. It’ll be interesting to watch and see exactly what that means.
