Goodbye Cliff, Hello Moises

The Mets affectively cut Cliff Floyd loose with yesterday’s signing of Moises Alou. According to general manager Omar Minaya Alou will be the regular left fielder next season making Floyd, affectionately called ‘glass’ by fans, expendable.

In four years in a Mets uniform (or should I say parts of 4 years since he only played 1 full season) Floyd hit .268 in 1643 at bats (an average of 410 per season), with 242 runs, 92 doubles and 81 home runs. His best year was 2005 when he played 150 games with 34 home runs, 85 runs and 98 RBIs.

Alou hit .301 with 22 home runs, 74 RBIs and 52 runs scored with the San Francisco Giants last season. At 40 years old he’ll probably only spend one season with the Mets (he signed a 1 year contract with a club option for a second year.

The move also means that, contrary to what some people believed, Lastings Milledge will not be the regular left fielder next year. Instead he will either platoon in right field with Shawn Green or play every day at AAA. I like the idea of Milledge playing a whole year at AAA so he can mature a little bit.

The Alou acquisition means that Minaya thinks this team has what it takes to win now. Putting a veteran in left field instead of a younger, greener player is a savvy move for a team that is that close to being a champion. We’ll see if it works.

peavy and linbrook

I have not heard of this one but it seems unlikely the mets would give up all 3 of those players in the same trade.
