Pedro Out of Post Season

It was fairly obvious after Wednesday night’s horrible start that Pedro Martinez would not be starting game 1 of the NLDS. He didn’t look good. He didn’t feel good. What wasn’t obvious was what would be announced late yesterday. That Pedro suffered a torn tendon in his left calf. That is not the calf that had him on the DL earlier this month. This is the so called “healthy” calf. I guess the word healthy is relative. Pedro will be out 4 to 6 weeks which means he will not participate in the post season regardless of how far the Mets get.

Though this news is bitter and tough to take it’s really not the end of the world for the Mets. They’ve operated with Pedro on the DL two times this season and survived quite nicely. And while it definitely hurts to have him out, Pedro hasn’t pitched very much like Pedro through most of the season.

Manager Willie Randolph and Tom Glavine have both been quoted as saying, more or less, losing Pedro is tough but we can win without him and we just have to deal with it. Sage advice from two post season veterans.

Randolph already has a plan B set up that will have Orlando Hernandez starting game 1 and Glavine starting game 2. These are two seasoned pitchers with plenty of post season experience between them. The unanswered question is what does the rotation look like after that? There are plenty of arms to choose from and Randolph will have to narrow them down to two. I’d expect him to have name the game 3 starter no later than Sunday but he may not name the game 4 starter until after game 1. The rules state that teams have until the morning of game 1 to set their roster for the series so unless Randolph make an announcment about the rotation there’s not much to speculate on until 10 am Tuesday.
