El Duque Lives!

I was talking to a friend a few couple of ago about the Mets acquisition of Orlando Hernandez. My friend was not happy with the trade. He thpought the Mets could do better. He insisted that El Duque was washed up and not worth it. My response was a threefold argument which was as follows:

  1. The bottom of the rotation is thin even when not injured.
  2. Jorge Julio wasn’t getting the job done in the bullpen so what have the Mets got to lose by trading him for a starter? Hernandez certainly couldn’t have failed as a starter any worse than Julio did in the bullpen.
  3. Hernandez can still bring it. Just you watch.

Based on last night’s game my response was somewhat prophetic as El Duque pitched a complete game 3 hitter against his former team and giving the bullpen a much needed rest. I don’t expect him to be that good every time out but it shows that he can still pitch a good game and is definitely worth holding on to. Besides, are there any other worthwhile options out there that would come any cheaper?
