Maine Flops

John Maine made his start last night and had me wishing he and Jorge Julio were not traded to the Mets for Kris Benson. That’s a pretty harsh statement but last night’s game really stunk. Maine had a line that most of the reports I read pegged as passable. Maybe I’m being too strong and maybe I’m old school but allowing 6 hits and 4 earned runs in 5 1/3 innings isn’t acceptable.

OK. I’ll give Maine the benefit of the doubt since this was his first start with the Mets.

Anyway, the Mets bats were totally silent except for solo homers by Paul Lo Duca and Carlos Beltran. In fact those were two out of only 3 hits they mustered on the night. They only got two hits off of rookie starter Mike O’Connor making only his second big league start.

Good, bad and ugly from last night’s game
The Good – Lo Duca (2 for 4, 1 HR)
The Bad – Jose Reyes (0 for 4, his .248 average is unacceptable for a major league leadoff hitter)
The Ugly – Darren Oliver (2 IP, 2H, 2ER, 1HR)
