Victor-y Is Ours
VÃctor Zambrano had his best start of the young season yesterday. Not that the bar was set so high but his 6 inning, 5 hit and 1 run performance last night would have been a good start for anyone. It’ll be interesting to see if the Mets can get a similarly good start from John Maine tonight when he makes his first Mets start in place of the injured Brian Bannister (as I predicted).
Even with the good outing the Mets still struggled to get runs in this one. They won on a walkoff error in the bottom of the ninth when Nats reliever Gary Majewski threw a double play combacker hit by Paul Lo Duca into center field allowing Endy Chavez (who was pinch running for Julio Franco) to score the winning run.
But the game was good for Zambrano who was clearly on the bubble going into the game. Sure, he only had 3 starts going into last night’s game but with guys like Maine and Jose Lima at AAA there’s a very low threshold for bad performances before a rotation change can (and probably will) be made. This good start probably bought Zambrano a couple of extra starts to prove himself.
And now for the good, bad and ugly of last night’s game:
Good – Zambrano (Best outing of the year so far)
Bad – Mets hitting with runners on base (11 LOB)
Ugly – Jose Reyes (was tagged out in a run down between second and third base on a possible triple because he failed to hustle out of the batters box)
