Mets Win in 11
It was the kind of game I’ve talked about on MostlyMets many times before. A character builder. A game where one event happens that deflates you but instead of folding you rise to the occassion and show the opponent who’s boss.
The deflating event happened in the 9th inning. After a David Wright throwing error allowed one run to score Barry Bonds came on to pinch hit and promptly knocked a 2-run homer off Mets closer Billy Wagner to tie the game.
The Mets could have folded after that. The Bonds blast was just that devastating. But they didn’t. They focused, dug in and won the game in 11 innings.
It was an interesting game all around. Here is a run down of some of the highlights.
- Julio Franco became the oldest player since 1909 to steal a base.
- Bonds homer was number 711 of his career. (We’ll let the investigators decide if there should be an asterisk on that number.)
- Brian Bannister pulled up lame at home plate in the sixth inning and was removed from the game. He will be evaluated in Atlanta but it is being called a hamstring strain for now. This will either be nothing or something big.
- This was Wagner’s second blown save of the season. Both blown saves occured in games started by Bannister.
And now for the good, bad and ugly of yesterday’s game:
Good – Carlos Delgado (9th homer ties Mets club record for homers in April)
Bad – Wright (throwing error in 9th costly)
Ugly – Wagner (1 IP, 2H, 3 R, Blown Save)
