Yankee Fans: Wagner Used Mo’s Song

The pseudo controversy surrounding the music played when Billy Wagner enters games took an interesting turn yesterday. For those who didn’t know, Wagner came into the game with Metallica’s Enter Sandman playing over the Shea PA system. Yankee fans immediately took exception, berating Wagner for using the same song their beloved Mariano Rivera uses when he enters games via sports radio call in shows.

I have some news for Yankee fans. Wagner used it first. Wagner, a Mettalica fan, started using the song in 1996 at the suggestion of Houston Astros teammate Jeff Bagwell. It should be noted, by the way, that not only is Rivera not a Metallica fan but he didn’t even know the song until the Yankee Stadium scoreboard operator started playing it for him.

Metallica manager Peter Mensch is a Mets season tickets holder and was present on opening day when the song was played for Wagner’s first regular season appearance as a Met. His reaction? “Frankly, they could have played it louder as far as I’m concerned. My comment is: Go Billy.”

The reason why I termed this a pseudo controversy is because the only people who seem to think this is a big deal is Yankee fans who’s reaction to this was along the lines of “how dare they use Mo’s song”. Well, it’s not Mo’s song. It’s Mettalica’s song. And until Rivera signs an exclusive contract with Metallica to use the song thenWagner is free to use it. It’s only a song. Anybody can use it. And you should do some research about baseball outside of Yankeeville before you start complaining about such trivialities.

For the record, both pitchers have said they don’t have a problem with the other using the song.
