Shoeless Pedro
Today’s news out of St. Lucie involves a shoe. Or rather the lack of a shoe. Nike has yet to deliver the special shoe for Pedro Martinez‘s ailing big toe. Without the shoe Martinez cannot throw or run. As a result he’s behind his normal spring schedule and training camp hasn’t even opened yet. This is a situation that will bear contant monitoring even after the shoe arrives.
In other news the Mets signed RHP Jose Lima to a minor league deal yesterday and invited him to spring training. He will probably compete for the fifth starter position. Given Lima’s past I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing but it’s not a bad signing as an insurance policy. Either way it’ll be nice to see another personality out there if even for the next few weeks.
