Islanders Fire Stirling; Milbury Gets Promotion

So let me get this straight. The Islanders fired coach Steve Stirling, replacing him on an interim basis with assistant coach Brad Shaw, and once general manager Mike Milbury helps owner Charles Wang find a replacement coach he will move up in the organization as the VP for Wang’s sports properties.

This is the 9th coaching change in 10 years for the Islanders beginning when Milbury himself was coach. In that time the team has not won a playoff series and failed to qualify for the playoffs 7 times.

So the questions I have are as follows:

  1. Should performance like that be rewarded by greater responsibility in the organization?
  2. Why have Milbury is leave his GM position after a coach is hired? Why not promote him now, hire a new GM right away and let the new GM hire his own coach?

Obviously Wang has no idea what he’s doing.
