Edwards Goes to KC
It looks like all those quotes of Herman Edwards saying he wasn’t leaving the Jets was a pack of lies. The Jets are holding a press conference at 11 am today in which it is expected that GM Terry Bradway will announce that Edwards will be coaching the Kansas City Chiefs next season.
I can’t say that I’m surprised by this news. I’ve heard enough public denials from people in professional sports to be more surprised when the denials are actually true then when they’re not. The general rule is the more emphatic the denial the more probable it is that the rumor is true. For example, when George Steinbrenner emphatically stated “I will not fire Billy Martin!” you knew excatly what was going to happen next.
I used to be a tremendous Herman Edwards fan. But even earlier this season before the injury bug got way out of control I began to cool a bit in my Edwards enthusiasm. There was a point in the season (during the game where Chad Pennington and Jay Fiedler were both injured) when Edwards stopped coaching to win and started to coach not to lose. That’s when I lost respect for Edwards. I don’t care who you have back there. It could be Pennington, Fiedler, Vinny Testaverde, Brooks Bollinger, Joe Namath or Joe Don Baker. But whoever your quaterback is you coach for him to win and not for him not to embarrass yourself.
Maybe if Edwards had done that he may have gotten the contract extension he coveted in light of the abysmal record this team was destined to achieve. He would have been given credit for keeping the team together and competitive through the turmoil of an injury plagued season. Instead he cooled his engines and slithered off to Kansas City.
I honestly wish Edwards the best of luck in his new job. Despite my criticism above he doesn’t deserve what the New York Press has already started to put him through. He’s not a bad coach but New York was his first head coaching job and the experience he gained here will help him tremendously in the future.
Now lets see who the next loser is to get this job.
