Barry Bonds – Racist?

An article in the Chicago Tribue quotes Barry Bonds as calling Ron Kittle an idiot for commenting in his book how Bonds said he doesn’t sign autographs for white people. The incident apparently happened at Wrigley Field in 1992. Kittle asked Bonds to sign some things that would then be auctioned off to raise money for cancer research and claims Bonds responded “I don’t sign for white people.”

Bonds sounded off on Kittle claims yesterday:

Who is Kittle? How long did he play? He played in our league? Ha! Do you guys believe that? Do you guys know my life history a little bit? One, you insult my children, who are half-white. I was married to a woman who was white, so let’s get real. I don’t even know the guy. Tell him he’s an … idiot. Somebody said he wanted a piece of me. Tell him I’m at 24 Willie Mays Plaza and he can come get me anytime he wants to—with pleasure. Don’t insult my family.

I’m with you on the family part of your answer, Barry. Good response. But what do you mean by asking how long Kittle played? Does that matter? He could have never played and the story would have been the same. The length of his playing career has nothing to do with the credibility of the story.

Just to clue you in, Barry. Ron Kittle hit 176 home runs in his 10-year career which began in 1983 when he won AL Rookie of the Year. He retired after the 1991 season.

As for the credibility of the story it’s just another ‘my word against yours’ scenario as Kittle insists he’s telling the truth. We’ll never know for sure who is telling the truth. But Bonds can be such an a**hole at times that it makes the story very easy to believe.
