Click here for a recap of last night’s game.

The Mets failed to score a run for the second game in a row. In yesterday’s Game Comments I said that the Mets not being able to score was a great concern. Perhaps I was being alarmist based on the fact that the pitcher they were up against the previous night was Tim Hudson. But last night’s pitcher was rookie Kyle Davies who was making only his second major league start and was working on only 3 days rest. Here was a pitcher that was ripe for the picking and the Mets hitters couldn’t muster anything sustainable against him.

On the plus side Víctor Zambrano (6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER) had a good night on the mound. He was a victim of bad fielding (his own) when he didn’t wait long enough for David Wright to get to the bag before he threw the ball to third base in an attempt to get a force out on a ball hit by Pete Orr. The play cost him 2 unearned runs.

Carlos Beltran was out of the starting lineup again but pinch hit late in the game. Today’s Daily News says that Beltran’s injury may lead to the return of Víctor Díaz. Díaz is eligible to be called up tomorrow and the Mets may want him back to fill an outfield spot until Beltran is ready to start again.

On the plus side, the Phillies put an end to the Marlins win streak yesterday. Florida had won 6 in a row in their longest win streak of the season. Maybe the loss will take a little wind out of their sails and allow the Mets to gain an edge.
